How to choose your distributor in the Gulf

Published on 1 November 2026

Choosing the right distributor often decides whether a Gulf export project succeeds. A good partner opens doors to key accounts. A poor one can block your brand for years. These are the criteria I use to qualify every candidate.

The six criteria

  1. Real coverage. One country or several across the Gulf? Check where they actually have teams and clients, not only where they say they operate.
  2. Portfolio. Which brands do they already carry? Complementary products are an asset. A direct competitor is a warning sign.
  3. Technical capability. Can they install, train and provide after-sales service? For industrial equipment this is often decisive.
  4. References. Which end clients do they serve? Ask for concrete examples and, if possible, meet one.
  5. Financial strength. Can they hold stock and absorb their own clients’ payment terms?
  6. Commitment. How many people will work on your brand? A distributor handling two hundred brands will not push yours without clear targets.

Before you sign

Limit exclusivity in time and tie it to measurable targets. Set the exit conditions from the start.

In several Gulf countries, a registered agent or distributor may benefit from protections that make ending the contract difficult and costly. That is why every agreement must be reviewed by a lawyer licensed in the country concerned, before signing.

This article is a general introduction. The contract framework is built together with local lawyers.
